“For the first time in 16 long and too-lonely years I have someone to talk to. Now, I have friends. And a reason to keep going.”
Curtis’ battle with HIV isolated him for too many precious years. However, it was through the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation’s health and well-being program that Curtis was able to reach out and become connected, supported and healthy once again, transforming his life.
Australia’s longest running HIV charity has provided support and refuge to thousands of vulnerable people living with HIV over the last 34 years. It has become their mission to limit the challenging circumstances of such an unrelenting disease. Through providing direct financial and practical assistance, emotional support, financial counselling, housing, and study and employment support, the BGF helps people to find a new sense of hope and assistance to get back on their feet. This not-for-profit organisation ensures people from all walks of life living with HIV are welcomed into an open, safe and inclusive environment, regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, religion or sexual orientation. Through responding to the diverging needs of their clientele, the BGF is constantly adapting to the changing face of HIV.
The foundation originated after the death of Bobby Goldsmith, one of the first AIDS related deaths in Australia. Bobby was an active member of the gay community as well as a respected Australian athlete and dearly loved son, brother, partner, friend and uncle. Although it has been 34 years since his death, HIV and the social stigmas attached are still present, despite being a virus that anyone can contract. The BGF are constantly working to reverse the physical and emotional damage inflicted by the unforgiving virus by addressing social isolation and economic poverty to allow for healthy living.
No one should have to face HIV alone. For the month of February during Mardi Gras Festival, we will have a donation tin at the counter to collect donations to this incredible organisation. Want to do more? You can also donate at: http://www.bgf.org.au/donate/give-now/
For those of you who don’t already know, Bestow & Co was founded by Lara Esden & Kylie Dunn, and borne out of a strong desire to support grassroots women’s organisations and take their combined knowledge and experience in fashion, styling and working at the cold-face of community services to creating their own social enterprise. We featured them in a past newsletter, and you can read more about them here.
We are very excited to be hosting a pop-up boutique in our Fine Wine Room soon. Please stay posted via our FB & Insta feeds for exact date & time. This will be an opportunity where the girls from Bestow will bring their boutique offline where buyers can come and peruse amongst the racks, try things on, and engage face to face with Lara & Kylie. We will be holding a special wine tasting during the pop-up. Not to be missed!
Happy New Year to all our Fine Wine Group customers and members! 2019 is finally upon us and is set to be one of our biggest years yet, with plenty of exciting wine class events, seasonal wine dinners, masterclasses, and much more to look forward to.
Looking back on 2018, it was a big year of growth and prosperity with the opening of our third store on Bayswater Rd. We’re very fortunate to have been so well received by the community, with close to 1000 customers from the area joining us as valued members. Our team has also grown significantly, with the addition of incredible new staff members such as Samantha from the USA and Simon joining us at our Bayswater store, and Salvatore from Sicily joining our Paddo team.
2019 is shaping up to be a great year, and we are so happy to be part of your local community. If you’re not currently a member, make sure you join at one of our stores in order to stay in the loop of any upcoming events and current specials, while also receiving our newsletter which returns in February. Membership is free with many benefits.
xx Your Fine Wine Team
We are pleased to send you advanced notice of our final wine dinner for 2018 with Dominique Portet wines from the Yarra Valley on Tuesday December 11th from 7pm.
Ninth-generation winemaker Dominique Portet chose the cool climate of aptly named Coldstream in the Yarra Valley as home to the eponymous winery he founded in 2000.
It was the culmination of a tenacious search for grapegrowing terroir to rival that of his native Bordeaux – but also the start of a new chapter in a winemaking story that has its roots in France in the early 1700s.
Now son Ben – generation 10 – heads the winemaking team, firmly observing the central tenets of this young yet historic estate: respect for tradition, understanding of site and an open mind towards contemporary practices that shape wines that are ever more refined and delicious. Ben will be joining us on the 11th December at our Wine Dinner to co-host with our Fine Wine Team.
Lox Stock & Barrel is a cozy, forty seat Deli Diner located in one of the last remaining old pockets of Sydney’s, Bondi Beach. Their approach to food is that it should be healthy, delicious and something that you feel like eating. This is where our interpretation of the modern deli idea has come from. A delicatessen means “something delicious to eat”, i.e food without pretension, food that is simple to prepare, cooked from the heart, using what’s good, abundant and in season.
Influenced by the best loved dishes of our ancestors from pre-war Europe, but the inspiration is definitely the best of local, seasonal produce and satisfying, balanced eating. They run the kitchen as close to ‘farm to plate’ as possible. Our customers and friends share our food values – we all want to be connected to our food.
Chef Neil has prepared a delicious 3-course dinner for us that will be paired with wines from the Dominique Portet range. We hope you can join us. Seating is strictly limited to 40 people (with further seats being released pending weather closer to the date).
